I’m one of the coaches with Cork Boat Club rowing club and we are looking into buying some Olympic weightlifting as soon as possible.

We have one good leg press and two home made ones which are being used by about 70 members seven days a week. Our free weights comprise of very old, small thin bars and have become very warped over the years. We have one decent Olympic bar but the discs are not Olympic discs and I believe this hampers the overall technique of the lifting.

Budget is always an issue but we do want to buy quality. Would you know of any where we could buy either new or secondhand proper Olympic sets at a low price.

Kind regards,

Donald

Thank you for posting your message. I will send your message on to the various coaches in Ireland just to make sure your query is answered promptly.

In the last few years we have also been developing more opportunities for other sports to attend coaching classes so they can they go back to their club training rooms and teach the technique better. I could give you the contact details of our Coaching Development Officer if you would feel this is useful as you did mention technique may be an issue.

In addition Donald, there is a competition in Cork (see this link for further details http://weightlifting.informe.com/viewtopic.php?t=290) next month and it may be a good place to talk to a number of different lifters and to also see some top Irish lifters. From recently coaching a number of athletes from different sports I have found when they see the lifts being demonstarted correctly they often develop the correct technique faster.

Hope this information helps and I will try and get more later.

an online site in UK is www.pullum.co.uk. The strength of the UK pound though might make this expensive.

http://www.werksan.com/ is a usa company that sells very high quality bars at good prices. again with the dollar being very weak against the euro, now is a good time to buy from them. But of course, the shipping, from USA will be very expensive. Still worth getting a quote from.
